Is Kuwait Preparing for War in Gulf?

Kuwait has reportedly activated its "Emergency War Plan" as a massive U.S. and European fleet is reported heading for the region, said a report by the Middle East Times newspaper.

Coming on the heels of Operation Brimstone just a week ago that saw U.S., British and French naval forces participate in war games in the Atlantic Ocean, the joint task force is now headed for the Gulf in what could easily turn into a major confrontation with Iran, the report said.

It said the naval force comprises a U.S. Navy super carrier battle group and is accompanied by an expeditionary carrier battle group, a British Royal Navy carrier battle group and a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine.

Leading the pack, according to the report, is the nuclear-powered carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its Carrier Strike Group Two; besides its 80-plus combat planes the Roosevelt normally transports, it is carrying an additional load of French Naval Rafale fighter jets from the French carrier Charles de Gaulle, currently in dry dock.

Also reported heading toward Iran is another nuclear-powered carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan and its Carrier Strike Group Seven; the USS Iwo Jima, the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal and a number of French warships, including the nuclear hunter-killer submarine Amethyste, the Middle East Times reported.

It said once the naval force arrives in the Gulf region it will be joining two other U.S. naval battle groups already on site: the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Peleliu; the Lincoln with its carrier strike group and the latter with an expeditionary strike group.

The report said that this deployment is the largest naval task force from the United States and allied countries to assemble in the strategic waters of the Persian Gulf since the two Gulf wars.

It said naval deployment was designed to enforce an eventual blockade on Iran, if as expected by many observers, current negotiations with the Islamic republic over its insistence to pursue uranium enrichment yielded no results.

Adding to the volatility, the report went on to say, is the presence of a major Russian navy deployment which had been sent earlier this year to the eastern Mediterranean.

The Russian fleet comprises the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov with approximately 50 Su-33 warplanes that have the capacity for mid-air refueling. This means, according to the Middle East Times, the Russian warplanes could reach the Gulf from the Mediterranean, a distance of some 850 miles and would be forced to fly over Syria and Iraq as well, where the skies are controlled by the U.S. military, and the guided missile heavy cruiser Moskva. The Russian task force is believed to be composed of no less than a dozen warships as well as several submarines.

Russia, however, is unlikely to get involved in a military showdown in the Persian Gulf, particularly at this time when it is engaged in a major confrontation with the Republic of Georgia in South Ossetia, the report said.

It said that for Iran, a naval blockade preventing it from importing refined oil would have devastating effects on its economy, virtually crippling the Islamic republic's infrastructure. Although Iran is a major oil producer and exporter, the country lacks refining facilities having to re-import its own oil once refined.

Iran's oil – both the exported crude as well as the returning refined product – passes through the strategic Straits of Hormuz, controlled by Iran on one side and the Sultanate of Oman – a U.S. ally – on the other.

Although Kuwait is on the opposite end of the entrance to the Gulf and the Straits of Hormuz, Kuwait City is less than 60 miles from Iran – and with good reason to worry.

"Kuwait was caught by surprise last time, when Iraqi troops invaded the small emirate and routed the Kuwaiti army in just a few hours," a former U.S. diplomat to Kuwait told the Middle East Times. Beirut, 12 Aug 08, 17:06

I am surprised not to have read about this on other local blogs.

My heart goes out to the workers who have just been deported just because they stood up for their right. While many were injured there are rumours of some having lost their lives. I am not supporting their acts of violence (damaging property & assault) however I feel deporting them is a bit harsh.

These people have paid (many by taking loans) huge amounts to agents in order to procure jobs in Kuwait - what will happed once they return to their home country?

There was one person (a Bangladeshi) who work in our neighbouring office. An innocent, kind hearted man with a soft heart. Communication with this chap was always a challenge as he lacked basic education. He would speak a dialect which is a combination of four languages - Arabic + Hindi + English + Bengali.

To my knowledge, he returned to work in Kuwait 4 yrs ago, leaving his pregnant wife in Bangladesh. He would compensate his monthly income (20-30KD) by washing our cars (5KD / car / month). He was not a participant in these strikes. He has been missing since Saturday / Sunday. I was told that he was at a bakala (grocery shop) in the same area where the strike was taking place and was arrested by the police. In the process, he apparently sustained some wounds and to be taken to hospital. Unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries. (update: Apparently he is alive however he will be deported shortly.)

Did he deserve this?

This is not the Democracy that I know - I call this modern slavery.

KUWAIT: L.M., an Asian domestic worker who has just managed to escape from her employer''s house and wishes to remain anonymous, has suffered greatly at the hands of her violent and abusive employer.

In an exclusive interview with Al Watan Daily, L.M. explained how she got to this country and the harrowing ordeal that became the reality of her life in Kuwait. L.M., a fortyـyearـold woman who is married and has four children, used to live with her husband back home in a small house made of dried grass fronds and bamboo reeds erected in a middle of a plantation. She had heard that Kuwait was a good place to work and since not many cases of abuse had been reported in their local media, L.M. believed that Kuwait would be an ideal place for her to earn some money and improve her family''s financial situation. She decided to take out a loan using the land she owned as collateral to pay a local recruitment agency to find her a job as domestic helper in Kuwait.

L.M. recalled her first year of employment and described how the situation at home began to change when her female employer would travel and leave her alone with her male employer. L.M. sobbed as she narrated how she was sexually abused every time her female employer was not home. She attempted to report the abuse to her female employer many times, but the man threatened to kill her.

She finally managed to contact her agency and requested a job transfer, however her new employer also locked her up and raped her several times while refusing to pay her salary for two months. L.M. wanted to give up and return home, however she was convinced by her local agency to stay in Kuwait and was promised that she would be transferred to yet another house.

It was not too long before the agency found her another employer in the form of an Arab female divorcee. "She was very nice to me in the beginning. But then many things changed when one day she started hitting me hard on my face and wanted to rip my skin in half with her long nails. I bled many times and most of my nights were spent in a bathroom locked and bleeding," L.M. described to Al Watan Daily. She recalled not being fed for prolonged periods of time and being given merely water and a small piece of Arabic bread every three days. Her employer would let her out of the bathroom to clean and wash the clothes and would then lock her up once again the rest of the time."My employer sprayed insect killer on my whole body and in many instances mixed ''Clorox'' in the water which she offered me every now and then, she also forced me to eat chili powder. I've lost all my hair and my scalp has bled profusely when she banged my head against the wall and pulled my hair," L.M. added. She also described being sexually abused by her female employer who violated her private parts, pushed head inside the toilet bowl and constantly kicked her body till she would cry in agony and pain. All her clothes were thrown away and for fourteen months she wore the same clothes."After beating me, I remember my employer would sing and dance as if rejoicing.... If I started to cry, she would kick my stomach and hit my knees with anything she could get her hands on," L.M. said. She explained that she has been beaten while working and when she fell on the floor several times, her employer would step on her back till she screamed in pain. Part of L.M.'s skin has been burned by hot water being poured on her several times, and she has also lost a few of her teeth as a result of constant blows to the face. She also suffers from blurred vision in her left eye due to the scalding in hot water and the toxic substances thrown on her by her employer. Finding the main door open one day after food had been delivered to the house, L.M. took the chance to escape and sought refuge at a nearby store. The store owner took pity on her and called her a taxi, paid for the fare and gave the driver strict instructions to take her to her embassy. "She arrived at the embassy crying hysterically and we had to clean her up, her hair was almost gone and she was very weak," said K.K., another domestic worker who is being sheltered at the embassy''s safe house.

An embassy official who requested anonymity added: "We have already filed a field case against the employer and asked her local agency to provide assistance to facilitate her departure as soon as the case is over. Sometimes I wonder, when other maids kill their employers, in situations like these, is it justified? How many more domestic helpers are suffering in silence and how many times do we claim that we do not violate human rights? Who tells the truth... that is always the question.

Why have people become so cruel... dont you know the amount pain being inflicted... imagine the physical & mental ordeal this person has been through. Why treat a fellow human with such unkindness? Is humanity DEAD? What is the motive of such sadistic torturing of fellow human beings.

My question to those who have tortured this lady. Are you not a human - for sure you cannot be. Is your conscience dead? Would you like to see the same done to you or your dear ones? If you do follow any particular religion, is this what it tell you to do?

If ever the accused were to be judged - they should be hanged till death after being whipped in public.

This issue seems to be getting a lot of coverage.

The below pics were posted in a local newspaper & internet including private blogs. Personally if the MP's want to make this an issue.. by all means go ahead... its their Country, however the pictures should have been censored.

Every Country has its own limits. Public display of these photos is uncalled for. At the end of the day these are women - Privacy should be maintained.

Media should not splash such pictures - opening it wide for others to criticize on their character. These women belong to a family. They are someone's sister or wife. Its a very disrespectful step taken by the media.

These people should sue the media for displaying their pictures.

This guy must be kickin his ass ... he must have left Q8.

d) The first Jin-class (Type 094) was launched in 2004 and first spotted with commercial satellite images in July 2007. A second Jin-class SSBN has been launched and a third appears to be under construction. U.S. naval intelligence has projected that China might build five SSBNs if it wants to have a more permanent sea-based deterrent, and the DOD 2008 DOD report in March 2008 that Chinese forces by 2010 might include "up to five" Jin-class SSBNs.

e) The DOD reported in 2008 that 50-250 DH-10 have been deployed in air- and ground-based versions. Only a portion of the H-6 force, perhaps 30 aircraft, are estimated to have secondary nuclear mission. The H-6 is being modified to carry the DH-10. The Q-5 may no longer be nuclear-capable. There is no reliable information that newer tactical aircraft have been assigned nuclear role.
